regarding one of the abovementioned students...

according to the WHO database as of 19 May, the tally in Japan is the 4th largest in the world, just behind USA, Mexico and Canada. on the other hand, confirmed swine flu cases in Asian countries like China and Korea have not increased much. according to Prof. Urashima from Jikei University School of Medicine, maybe these countries are unable to grasp the situation/number of people infected, and thus there haven't been that many reports of infections. especially since the air network is spread throughout the globe, it won't be surprising if the infection is spreading in other countries, just like Japan.
the second reason is said to be the "national traits". Japanese are majime. they visit medical facilities once they think they have symptoms of swine flu. as for other countries, the medical systems are different and it's possible that people don't go to the hospital as long as it's not severe.
↑ true. if i were sick i'd stay at home instead. i see the doctor only if i want a medical certificate to skip classes :o

as of now, more than 260 people have been infected in Japan (「国内の感染者は成田空港で確認された高校生ら4人を含め267人」 ~ 毎日新聞 2009年5月20日 22:35), but only 1 person needed intensive medical care at the hospital.
BY THE WAY... i live near Kawasaki 8D
